In recent years they extracted certain compounds from American Sweetgum fruit, such as shikimic acid, a precursor to the production of oseltamivir phosphate, the active ingredient in Tamiflu (an antiviral drug effective against several influenza viruses)
Oseltamivir shortens the duration of several influenza viruses because it inhibits the protein that allows the virus to burst from it’s host cell.
Parts that can be used: bark, sap, fruit, and resin.
